Working in Malibu is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we are surrounded by green mountains, blue water, and what some consider to be the most beautiful stretch of coastline in the country. On the other, we are seldom able to enjoy any of it. Each May, when we begin to see the first signs of summer, my coworkers and I make a pact to eat lunch at the beach every Friday. But if previous years are any indication, we will all get tied up with work and will not follow through on our plans more than once or twice this summer.

For those of you who are able to enjoy the beach this season, this issue offers a range of great finds—from the top new boutiques in Malibu (p. 20) to the best ice cream shop on Martha’s Vineyard (p. 30)—as well as profiles of some of the world’s most amazing oceanfront houses (pp. 32, 40, 48, and 56).

Those of you who are not able to enjoy the beach as much as you would like can at least enjoy the work of one of my favorite photographers, Massimo Vitali (featured here and on p. 24), an Italian artist most famous for his large-scale color photographs of Italy’s coastline. The images of people at leisure are captured in a way that feels both familiar and glamorously exotic, which is exactly how I feel about Malibu’s beaches every time I pass them on my way to work.
